2011 D.C. United preview: Olsen & Co. look ahead

The Tweet and Lowdown:

Club legend Ben Olsen takes the reins as D.C. United aim to erase memories of recent regular-season struggles.

Setting the Scene:

Last year was a season to forget for DC. Unable to score up front and frail at the back, 2010 produced one of the worst seasons in team history, with just six wins on the year and the lowest point total in the league.

Utah Readies for Transition to Pac-12

It might be hard to believe, but Utah is in an unenviable position as it heads into spring football practice on March 8.

Yes, the Utes are making a much-anticipated move to the Pac-12, becoming the first non-AQ to make the jump to an AQ league since 2005, but they're doing so with no starting running back, no starters returning in the secondary, a new offensive coordinator and system, and a starting quarterback who's on the shelf because of shoulder surgery.

It's not the way coach Kyle Whittingham envisioned his entrance onto the Pac-12 stage.

Utah is 4-3 against the old Pac-10 since Whittingham took over in 2005. But those games were either bowl or non-conference games that were easy to get up for. Preparing the Utes to face the caliber of talent they will see in the Pac-12 game in and game out is going to take some time and some strong recruiting.

"I think depth is probably the factor there," Whittingham said. "When you're talking about playing the physical teams that we'll be playing week in and week out, I think your depth of your squad is going to become even more important than it was in the Mountain West Conference. I think that, really, in my opinion, is what separates conference from conference is the overall talent of your roster from one to 85. In my opinion, the teams in the Pac-12 have more depth on their rosters than what you find in the Mountain West Conference."

Whittingham, his staff and his players have spent countless hours watching film of various Pac-12 members, trying to establish tendencies, trends and see just where the Utes need to get better. One of those areas was offense, so Whittingham brought in former UCLA and USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Last season, the Utes went from averaging 45 points per game in the first eight games to just 11 in the final five.

Andy Najar, Honduras And His Media-Driven National Team Tug Of War

andy najar mlsAndy Najar has never been a big fan of the press.

"When you're a professional, you know that your job is to play but also you have other duties, and talking to the press is one of them. I'm starting to understand that more and more," he told me last fall, toward the conclusion of his rookie of the year season with D.C. United.

He said this during a one-on-one interview at RFK Stadium, from which I had been covering soccer for various publications for a decade.

In all that time, I had never encountered a player more ill at ease while talking to a reporter, and that included high school and college kids, non-English speakers and even Mia Hamm.

Najar spent twice as much time looking down at his phone as he did looking at me.

There certainly are mitigating factors. He's shy -- especially when dealing with English speakers he doesn't know -- and he's a 17-year-old from small-town Honduras for whom change has happened very fast.

Warriors Re-Sign Jeff Adrien From NBA D-League Following Trade Deadline Deals

Jeff AdrienThe Golden State Warriors have signed power forward Jeff Adrien from the NBA Development League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Adrien announced on his Twitter account.

The move comes following Wednesday's trade of Brandan Wright and Dan Gadzuric to the New Jersey Nets for Troy Murphy. Murphy is expected to be bought out of his contract, leaving the Warriors with less than the minimum of 13 players needed to be in compliance with NBA roster regulations.

Adrien, a 6-foot-7 power forward, began the season with the Warriors before being released on Dec. 9 so the team could sign Acie Law. In 15 games with Golden State, Adrien averaged 2.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in just over 10 minutes of playing time per contest.

Family of Slain Pace Player Indignant Over Grand Jury Ruling

A grand jury in a suburb north of New York City Monday declined to indict a police officer in the death of Danroy Henry, Jr., a Pace University football player shot while driving his car outside a bar in the Westchester County town of Thornwood.

Henry's father and his lawyer said they were not surprised by the decision and vowed to take the case to the United States Department of Justice and to pursue a civil suit.

"My faith was never in district attorney (Janet) DiFiore," Danroy Henry, Sr., said in a telephone conference call. "Our faith is in God. We were hoping she would surprise us but we had no faith in her."

Henry died a week before his 21st birthday and a few hours after the homecoming game from wounds caused by bullets fired from the gun of Aaron Hess, a police officer in Pleasantville, N.Y., who responded to a call to quell a disturbance in a parking lot after 1 a.m. on Oct. 17.

Although Henry was not involved in the fighting, Hess shot him from the hood of Henry's moving car. Police and witnesses disagreed as to whether police had told Henry to move his car or if Henry's actions put the officer in danger.

In a prepared statement, DiFiore said the grand jury of 23 persons heard testimony from 85 witnesses, including two passengers in the car with Henry and also from Hess, who testified without protection of immunity from prosecution. More than 100 exhibits were admitted into evidence at a proceeding which began on Jan. 10.

Charlie Davies Comes Full Circle in Long Road to Recovery

charlie daviesWASHINGTON, DC -- Charlie Davies was offered a tryout by D.C. United because the club was atop Major League Soccer's allocation priority list.

The expansion franchises in Portland (Kenny Cooper) and Vancouver (Jay DeMerit) had made their choices, and United was next in line thanks to its wooden spoon performance in 2010.

On the surface, it's that simple. It's in the rules.

But Davies, who credits religion for some of the strength required to overcome the horrific litany of injuries suffered in that 2009 car accident, might argue that greater forces are at play.

It was in the Washington area, of course, where the crash occurred -- two nights before the national team's World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica and about four miles from RFK Stadium, where Davies was introduced as United's newest player on Wednesday.

MLS 2011 Jerseys Unveiled: 'Cleanliness' and Conformity Reign

Major League Soccer remains haunted by the ghosts of horrible uniforms past.

The men in the photo to the right, which includes World Cup veterans like Tab Ramos, John Harkes and Roy Wegerle, are wearing the clown costumes designed for the league's inaugural campaign in 1996.

The uniforms (except Harkes') looked like the result of a tragic Spin Art accident or the creations of overly eager, soccer ignorant marketers trying to be outrageous. It was totally xtreme.

They were inspired by branding profiles such as these:

Tampa Bay Mutiny: "The...logo system doesn't have any rebellious sailors. No three-masted galleons. No rolling oceans. Just little green winged cyber-mutants from the dark blue depths of space."

San Jose Clash: "The driving spirit of the San Jose Clash is the scorpion. Quick, lethal and mean ... With shapes and colors that reflect the diverse ethnic makeup and heritage of the Bay Area, the logo system is derived from the soil it represents."

Kansas City Wiz: "Breakaways, bicycle kicks and sprawling headers will be the magic potion of the soccer wizards of Kansas City."

Dallas Burn: "The ... logo system starts with the cowboy of the asphalt West: the loners, outsiders and rebels found on cycle jackets and gas tanks."

Only two logos unveiled that day -- the New England Revolution's and Columbus Crew's -- remain untouched. That's progress.

Tiger Woods Sits One Shot Off Lead After Wild, Windy Third Round

Filed under:

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Tiger Woods overcame a poor start in windy conditions Saturday to shoot a par 72, one shot behind leader Rory McIlroy and two others going into the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic.

On dusty day in the desert when the wind reached 28 mph, Woods showed an uncanny ability to repeatedly rally.

He finished with a total of 7-under 209, behind second-round leader McIlroy (75), Denmark's Anders Hansen (71) and South Africa's Thomas Aiken (74). Woods is in a seven-way tie for fourth.

Woods shouldn't even be in contention going into Sunday. But the tough conditions took their toll on most of the top players, with McIlroy finishing at 3 over and Sergio Garcia -- who was eight shots ahead of Woods after nine holes -- finishing at 3 over and tied with Woods and five other players.

In an uneven round, Woods had an eagle, four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.
